Porsche 911 Storage Armrest® with Cupholder Option for 911/912E/930 1974-1989

BIRD Automotive invented the Storage Armrest at the beginning of the cellular phone era in 1985.  It is a very comfortable armrest for driver and passenger and provides convenient, attractive, and secure storage for phones, iPods, PDA's, and other valuables.  Most Armrests sold include the stainless steel Cupholder Option.

Storage Armrests and their mounting hardware are the same for all 911/912E/930 turbo models from 1974 thru the1989 Carrera I.  Armrests pivot up between the seats when not in use. Cars with factory sport seats before 1985 do not have the required 6" between the seatbacks for an armrest. The installation diagram below shows the retractable Armrest assembly.  The Cupholder Option is available with all Armrests.

Armrest shown open, closed, retracted.  Shown in 911 C2/C4.  Earlier 911 models use the same Armrest but different mounting brackets.

Armrest installs on top of tunnel.

Height adjustable.

Small holes drilled through top of tunnel but not thru floorpan so no rusting.

Selftap bolts covered by carpet

The Storage Armrest is:
Designed to blend into the car's interior with a factory original appearance.
Upholstered  in leather or occasionally vinyl to match the interior.  Many popular colors are in stock and most can be made to order.  Our weekly production cycle assures quick delivery.
Strong and secure. The Armrest frame and it's mounting brackets are made of steel. The hollow compartment  is securely lockable.
Built to the highest standards. Digitally controlled production equipment and conscientious old-world craftsmen assure consistent quality.  Our objective is for each Armrest to last as long as the car in which it is installed.
Installable by owners who have at least average mechanical ability in about an hour.  The Armrest is attached to the top of the tunnel behind the handbrake and heater controls.  Drilling into the top of the tunnel is required but not through the floorpan so no rusting occurs. The self tapping bolts and bracket legs are covered by the carpet and the Armrest can be removed inconspicuously.  About half our customers install their own. Alternatively, Porsche dealers and high-end mobile electronics retailers are fully qualified.
Warranted for four years against defects in material and workmanship and sold with a money-back satisfaction guarantee.

           Cupholder  Option

The Cupholder Option has a pair of adjustable stainless steel  fingers which surround the cup and hold it securely even in panic stops.  It accommodates containers ranging from a quart down to a can in size.  The Cupholder is attached inside the front of the compartment and when not in use folds up against the front of the compartment to save space. To use the Cupholder, open the lid all the way, almost 180 degrees, pivot the Cupholder up and adjust the fingers to fit the cup.  The bottom of the cup rests on the inside floor of the Armrest on a rubber pad  There is room for a second cup behind the first: it is constrained on all four sides but not as securely as the first cup. The Armrest continues to provide some support when the Cupholder is in use.

              Color Matching and Selection

Getting the color of an Armrest right the first time to match a customer's interior is essential to our success and we have done this satisfactorily many thousands of times over the past 15+ years.  Porsche offers only about a dozen standard colors which change only every several years.  So knowing the correct model and year is essential.  There is almost no similarity of colors within a particular make's model year.  When a  customer tells us his or her interior is black or blue or red or tan, we know.  When the color is uncertain, the vehicle's original purchase documents or window sticker has the name of the color or,  provide us with the vehicle identification number (VIN) and we will get the correct color name from Porsche.

Customers Say some of the nicest things.  A recent survey  of owners by Panorama, a leading Porsche publication, elicited the following response.  "I have enjoyed my 1998 911 993 immensely...  One thing I've added to both this car and our 1986 911 is a center console from Bird Automotive.  It makes driving more comfortable and gives you some much needed storage plus a high quality cup holder.  It can flip out of your way if you want to drive aggressively at a club event.  It's also very simple to install yourself and is well made." We wish we could buy this kind of advertising.
